Profile

The paintings of Andrew Crocker are rooted in tradition, yet convey the mystery, drama and emotional tension of the modern day. The formal grandeur of his panoramic skies and rolling countryside subscribes to the conventions of English landscape painting, although Crocker often populates his landscapes with incongruous figures and contemporary allegory. Crocker has exhibited extensively across Europe and America and has work held in collections in East Asia and Australia. He has received commissions from the Ladbroke Group and Ernst & Young and was a finalist in the B.P. Portrait Awards held at the National Portrait Gallery in 1996.

Crocker’s paintings are quintessentially English in both their eccentricity and formal grandeur. He combines unseen or mysterious events and unexpected incongruous figures with panoramic expanses of sky and countryside. Whilst drawing on the great tradition of English landscape painting, Crocker’s work is also portentous, creating a sense of drama and emotional tension which is thoroughly of our age.

Crocker graduated from Goldsmiths in 1985 and has since shown extensively in Britain as well as in the US; including Seattle, Miami and a solo show in New York. His work is held in collections in Europe, East Asia and Australia. Crocker is fascinated by the formal, often manipulated, quality of the English landscape, whether it be the West Country, the North Norfolk Coast, or his native North Yorkshire.
